Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on 4th April 1972. Her mother was her grandmother. She grew up being an all-single child. Scott attended The Philadelphia High School for Girls when she was a senior, and then she enrolled in Temple University. In Temple, Scott held two jobs as she was taking classes in secondary education. She hoped to be a high school English teacher. However, she was not able to achieve this dream when, after three years of studying and becoming a teaching assistant in college, she decided to leave. She started her career doing live performances of poems as well as her own work. She eventually joined forces along with Amir Quest Thompson, a member of The Roots. They wrote You Got Me together. She was first outed as a performer at the Roots Show. She secured subsequent collaborations with Eric Benet Will Smith Common. She was also able to gain experiences on the stage, as she performed in the Canada tour of the Broadway production Rent. She was the first signed artist to the Hidden Beach Recordings label.
